First few art classes since third grade have been so much fun!
The week started out with a task party, where ideas were drawn from a basket, and I had to complete whatever was on the paper. I made a hat from a plate, a doily and some fabric. It allowed me to create original art, as well as take some risks and have some fun with it. I was able to try different materials and just leave it up to chance to see what worked and what didn't. Afterward we reflected on summer work from the students in AP. This allowed me to reflect and observe the art that the other students had created, and give them some feedback (even though they know much more than I do). The final assignment we had was to enlarge a piece of Picasso's Guernica, and then collectively create the painting together. This helped me a lot with artistic behaviors, for a was able to develop the skills of shading and enlarging, which I had never done before, but also allowed me to communicate and collaborate with others when we put all the pieces together at the end like a puzzle. I did learn a lot this week and I believe that it has been a great start to the class.

A few weeks ago we watched a video on Guerilla Girls and how they communicate and talk about issues in the world through their artwork. In response to this, I used the artistic behavior of communication to talk about an issue that I was passionate about, and I created my own original art with this piece as well. I chose feminism and the idea that people believe that women should be perfect and never do anything physical. To communicate this, I decided to create a lips with a large lipstick smear across the page. I developed artistic skills during this project as well, because I used watercolors to paint the piece, which was something I had not done before. This also marked me taking a risk because I do not work well with things not in my control, and I just had to let the water colors run (I had some problems with that). Afterward, I got to reflect and observe others pieces when we did a critique day. I was able to see the other issues my classmates were trying to communicate also, giving me more of a global awareness of the art and ideas of others. Shortly after I completed my Complain piece, I got really sick, and I was behind for the next unit. But, we started the “Never Seen Never Will” project. This was a great project that allowed me to create original art about my interpretation of something I had never seen. Before I began the project, I did some more skill building with ink and calligraphy. I did some small doodles in my notebook, allowing me to get more comfortable with the pens and the ink. I then started my own “Never See Never Will” project, and I was able to do some more skill building in that project as well. I used acrylic paints to paint the little flowers on the inside of the ukulele I drew. I was not able to complete my piece before we reflected as a class, but I was still able to communicate and collaborate with other members of the class. We paired up with someone else in the class, and collaborated on different ideas for our own personal pieces. It helped me figure out what I wanted to do with my own, and learn about the projects of everyone else. |
